Joe Hilario Herrera, also known as See-Ru, was an American Pueblo painter, teacher, radio newscaster, politician, and a Pueblo activist. Born on May 17, 1923, in Cochiti, New Mexico, Herrera was the son of artist Tonita Peña and had trained at the Santa Fe Indian School. With a mixed Cochiti and San Ildefonso background, he inherited rich artistic traditions from his parents. Herrera's early interest in painting was influenced by watching his mother's husband, Julian Martinez, paint and experimenting with paint at the age of five. Herrera made significant contributions to Pueblo art and culture throughout his life, leaving behind a lasting legacy.
