John Sidney McCain III (August 29, 1936 – August 25, 2018) was an American politician and United States Navy officer. He served as a United States senator from Arizona from 1987 until his death in 2018. Prior to that, he served two terms in the United States House of Representatives. In 2008, McCain was the Republican nominee for president of the United States, ultimately losing to Barack Obama. McCain graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1958 and became a naval aviator, flying ground-attack aircraft from aircraft carriers. He was captured by the North Vietnamese during the Vietnam War and endured torture as a prisoner of war until 1973.
