John McWhorter is an American linguist specializing in creole languages, sociolects, and Black English. He currently serves as an associate professor of linguistics at Columbia University, where he also teaches American studies and music history. McWhorter is a highly regarded author on race relations and African-American culture, and he frequently contributes as a political commentator in his New York Times newsletter. Born and raised in Philadelphia, McWhorter's parents were a college administrator and a social work professor. He attended Friends Select School and later Simon's Rock College, where he earned an AA degree. With a background in the Black middle class and influenced by his Quaker school education, McWhorter brings a unique perspective to his work.
