John Martin Marr, born Maher on October 31, 1963, is an English musician, songwriter, and singer. Marr gained recognition as the guitarist and co-songwriter of the Smiths, a band active from 1982 to 1987. Born in Manchester to Irish parents, Marr formed his first band at age 13 and later collaborated with Andy Rourke before co-founding the Smiths with Morrissey. Marr's jangle pop guitar style became a distinctive part of the band's sound, contributing to their commercial success and critical acclaim. Following the Smiths' breakup, Marr went on to join various other bands including the Pretenders, The The, and the Cribs, and also pursued a successful solo career. He has collaborated with renowned artists such as Kirsty MacColl, Pet Shop Boys, Talking Heads, Bryan Ferry, and Hans Zimmer.
