He trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and began his career with supporting roles in TV series like Doctor Who (2013) and Peaky Blinders (2014). He gained recognition for his lead role as a sheep farmer in the film God's Own Country (2017), winning a British Independent Film Award. O'Connor achieved further success portraying a young Charles III in the Netflix series The Crown (2019–2020), earning a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award.
