Julius Winfield Erving II, commonly known as Dr. J, is a retired American professional basketball player. Born on February 22, 1950, Erving played a crucial role in legitimizing the American Basketball Association (ABA) and was the league's most prominent player when it merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1976. Throughout his career, he won three championships, four Most Valuable Player awards, and three scoring titles. Erving played for the ABA's Virginia Squires and New York Nets, as well as the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers. Notably, his teams never missed the postseason in his 16 seasons as a player. Erving is the eighth-highest scorer in ABA/NBA history, with 30,026 points. He was renowned for his slam dunking ability, including his iconic dunks from the free-throw line in Slam Dunk Contests. Erving was the only player voted Most Valuable Player in both the ABA and the NBA. In 1993, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
