Karl Malden (born Mladen George Sekulovich; March 22, 1912 – July 1, 2009) was an American stage, movie, and television actor. He gained recognition for his roles in the original Broadway productions of Arthur Miller's All My Sons and Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire in 1946-7. Malden went on to recreate his role in the 1951 film adaptation of Streetcar, winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Known for his intelligent intensity and homespun authenticity, Malden had a career spanning over 60 years. He appeared in notable films such as On the Waterfront (1954), I Confess (1953), Baby Doll (1956), and Birdman of Alcatraz (1962), for which he received a second Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination.
