Kate Bornstein is an American author, playwright, performance artist, actor, and gender theorist. Born on March 15, 1948, in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Bornstein hails from an upper middle-class Conservative Jewish family with Russian and Dutch ancestry. Graduating from Brown University in 1969, where they studied Theater Arts, Bornstein embarked on a diverse career. They have written extensively about their experiences with gender identity, having identified as gender non-conforming since 1986. Bornstein now identifies as non-binary and uses the pronouns they/them and she/her. In addition to their work on gender, Bornstein has also shared their personal struggles with anorexia, PTSD, and borderline personality disorder. They are recognized for their contributions to both literature and activism.
