Kathryn Kirkpatrick is an accomplished poet, scholar, and English professor at Appalachian State University. Born in Columbia, South Carolina in 1957, she grew up in a military family, living in various locations including the Philippines, Texas, Germany, and the Carolinas. Kirkpatrick's poetry explores the natural world, human interactions with nature, and the ethical treatment of animals. She has also made notable contributions to the field of Irish literature and culture. Kirkpatrick has received recognition for her poetic works, including awards for her collections such as The Body's Horizon (1996), Beyond Reason (2004), and Our Held Animal Breath (2012). With a B.A. in English from Winthrop University, an M.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. in Theories of Interpretation from Emory University, Kirkpatrick brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her teaching and writing.
