Kelly Rutherford is an American actress known for her roles in various television shows. She was born on November 6, 1968, in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Rutherford attended Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, California, and later studied at HB Studio in New York City and the Beverly Hills Playhouse in California. She began her career on daytime soap operas, appearing on Loving and later joining the cast of Generations from 1989 to 1991. Rutherford also had a regular role on the ABC drama Homefront in 1992. She gained further recognition for her performances as Stephanie 'Sam' Whitmore on Generations, Megan Lewis on Melrose Place, and Lily van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl.
