Kip Stephen Thorne, born on June 1, 1940, is an American theoretical physicist renowned for his significant contributions in gravitational physics and astrophysics. He served as the Richard P. Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) until 2009. Thorne, an esteemed colleague and close friend of Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan, has extensively researched and spoken about the astrophysical implications of the general theory of relativity. Notably, he provided scientific consultation and contributed to the research for the Christopher Nolan film Interstellar. In recognition of his groundbreaking work, Thorne was honored with the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics alongside Rainer Weiss and Barry C.
