Laura Lane Bush (Welch) is the wife of George W. Bush and served as the first lady of the United States from 2001 to 2009. Prior to that, she was the first lady of Texas from 1995 to 2000. Born on November 4, 1946, in Midland, Texas, Bush graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in education. She then worked as a second grade teacher before earning a master's degree in library science from the University of Texas at Austin. Bush met her husband in 1977 and they married later that year. Throughout her husband's political career, she campaigned alongside him and implemented numerous health-focused initiatives as First Lady of Texas.
