Laura Carmichael is an English film and television actress. She was born on July 16, 1986, in Southampton, England. Carmichael is best known for her portrayal of Lady Edith Crawley in the television period drama series, Downton Abbey. She has also appeared in other notable projects, including the television series Marcella (2016) and the feature film A United Kingdom (2016). Carmichael attended Shirley Junior School, The Mountbatten School, and Peter Symonds College. After graduating from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 2007, she worked in various odd jobs while attending auditions in fringe theatres. Her role in Downton Abbey gained her worldwide recognition.
