Lawrence Francis O'Donnell Jr. (born November 7, 1951) is an American television anchor, actor, author, and screenwriter. He is best known as the host of The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell, an opinion and news program that airs on MSNBC weeknights. O'Donnell has also had a successful career in the television industry, working as a writer, producer, and actor. He was involved in the NBC series The West Wing, playing the role of President Bartlet's father in flashbacks. He also created and executive produced the NBC series Mister Sterling and appeared as a recurring character on the HBO series Big Love. O'Donnell began his political career as an aide to U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan and has described himself as a practical European socialist.
