Lorne Michaels, born Lorne David Lipowitz on November 17, 1944, is a Canadian-American television writer and film producer. He is best known as the creator and producer of Saturday Night Live, a show he has produced since its inception in 1975. Michaels has also produced other notable television series such as Late Night (since 1993), The Kids in the Hall (1989-1995), and The Tonight Show (since 2014). With 21 Primetime Emmy Awards and 98 nominations, Michaels holds the record for the most nominated individual in Emmy history. Born in Palestine, Michaels immigrated to Toronto as an infant and was raised there. He attended University College, Toronto, majoring in English, before starting his career as a writer and broadcaster for CBC Radio.
