Louis Cameron Gossett Jr. (born May 27, 1936) is an American actor known for his extensive career in film and television. Born in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City, Gossett made his stage debut at the age of 17 in a school production. He went on to audition and land roles on Broadway, including the play 'Take a Giant Step.' Gossett made his screen debut in the 1961 film adaptation of 'A Raisin in the Sun.' He gained widespread recognition for his role as Fiddler in the 1977 miniseries 'Roots,' winning an Emmy Award. Gossett won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1982 for his performance in 'An Officer and a Gentleman,' becoming the first black actor to win this award.
