    Matthew Stephen Ward, professionally known as M. Ward, is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist from Portland, Oregon. Born on October 4, 1973, Ward's solo work is a blend of folk and blues-inspired Americana analog recordings. He has released 10 studio albums since 1999, primarily through the independent label Merge Records. In addition to his solo career, Ward is a member of indie pop duo She & Him and folk-rock supergroup Monsters of Folk. He has also collaborated with various other artists, contributing to recording, producing, and playing. Raised in Glendale, California, Ward taught himself songs by the Beatles and began recording demos on a four-track analog tape recorder in his teens. He continues to record analog and starts all of his songs as demos on the same recorder he has had since his youth.
