Marc Lawrence Biography
Marc Lawrence (1910-2005) was an American character actor known for his roles as underworld types. Born Max Goldsmith in New York City to a Polish Jewish mother and a Russian Jewish father, Lawrence attended the City College of New York before receiving a scholarship to Eva Le Gallienne's repertory theater. He befriended actor John Garfield and both appeared in several plays together before Lawrence signed a film contract with Columbia Pictures. Lawrence's film career started in 1933 and he went on to portray numerous heavies, thanks to his pock-marked complexion, brooding appearance, and New York street-guy accent. Throughout his career, he also used the names F. A. Foss, Marc Laurence, and Marc C. Lawrence.
