Maria Keogh Semple (born May 21, 1964) is an American novelist and screenwriter. She is best known for her novels This One Is Mine (2008), Where'd You Go, Bernadette (2012), and Today Will Be Different (2016). Semple has also made a mark in the television industry, with writing credits on popular shows such as Beverly Hills, 90210, Mad About You, Saturday Night Live, Arrested Development, Suddenly Susan, and Ellen. She received the prestigious Alex Awards in 2013. Semple was born in Santa Monica, California, and spent part of her childhood in Spain, where her father, the screenwriter Lorenzo Semple, Jr., worked on the acclaimed television series Batman. She attended Choate Rosemary Hall for boarding school and later obtained a BA in English from Barnard College in 1986. Her talent as a screenwriter was recognized with a Primetime Emmy nomination for Mad About You in 1997.
