Mark Gatiss (born October 17, 1966) is an English actor, comedian, screenwriter, director, producer, and novelist. He is known for his work in popular television series such as Doctor Who, Sherlock, Game of Thrones, and Dracula. Alongside Reece Shearsmith, Steve Pemberton, and Jeremy Dyson, Gatiss is a member of the comedy team The League of Gentlemen. Born in Sedgefield, County Durham, Gatiss grew up with a passion for Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes, and Hammer Horror films. He began his career in theatre in 1983 and has since established himself as a versatile and talented actor, writer, and director in both film and television.
