Born on October 27, 1963, in Cohutta, Georgia, Maples grew up with a homemaker and model mother and a father who was a real estate developer, singer, and songwriter. She attended Northwest Whitfield High School, where she excelled in basketball, served as class secretary, and was crowned the 1980–1981 homecoming queen.
