Martin Donovan (born Martin Paul Smith; August 19, 1957) is an American actor known for his collaborations with director Hal Hartley. He has appeared in several of Hartley's films, including Trust, Surviving Desire, Simple Men, Amateur, Flirt, and The Book of Life, where he portrayed Jesus Christ. Donovan played Tom Gordon in the TV series Ghost Whisperer and Peter Scottson on Showtime's Weeds. He made his writing and directing debut with the film Collaborator in 2011. Additionally, Donovan played Detective Hap Eckhart in Christopher Nolan's Insomnia (2002) and CIA handler Fay in Nolan's Tenet (2020). Born in Reseda, California, Donovan attended Crespi Carmelite High School and American Theater Arts in Los Angeles.
