Martin Joseph O'Malley is an American lawyer and former politician. He served as the 61st governor of Maryland from 2007 to 2015 and was the 48th mayor of Baltimore from 1999 to 2007. O'Malley's political career began with his surprise win in the Democratic primary for the mayoral election in Baltimore. As mayor, he focused on reducing crime in the city and was reelected in 2004. During his tenure as governor, O'Malley introduced initiatives such as Maryland StateStat and signed the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. He also passed laws granting in-state college tuition to illegal immigrants brought to the US as children and legalizing same-sex marriage in Maryland.
