Martin Savage

Martin Savage (Máirtín Sabhaois; 12 October 1897 – 19 December 1919) was an Irish Republican Army Officer from Ballisodare, County Sligo. Born on 12 October 1897, Savage became involved in the fight for Irish Independence after working as an apprentice grocer in Sligo Town. He joined the Irish Volunteers in 1915 and participated in the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin, fighting at the Four Courts. Captured by the British Army, Savage was imprisoned in Richmond Barracks and later deported to Knutsford Detention Barracks in Cheshire, England. On 19 December 1919, during the early stages of the Irish War of Independence, he was killed in a gun battle during an ambush in Ashtown, Dublin.
