Martin Sherman Biography
Martin Gerald Sherman (born December 22, 1938) is an American dramatist and screenwriter known for his 20 stage plays produced in over 60 countries. He gained fame in 1979 with his play Bent, exploring the persecution of homosexuals during the Holocaust. Bent was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play in 1980 and won the Hull-Warriner Award. Sherman adapted it for a major motion picture in 1997 and as a ballet in Brazil. Living and working in London since 1980, Sherman is Jewish and openly gay. Many of his works highlight the discrimination and marginalization of minorities. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Camden, New Jersey.
