Mary Beth Peil (born June 25, 1940) is an American actress and soprano. She began her career as an opera singer in 1962 with the Goldovsky Opera Theater. Peil gained recognition after winning two major singing competitions in 1964, the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, leading to a contract with the Metropolitan Opera National Company. She performed as a leading soprano in two seasons of national tours from 1965 to 1967. Peil continued to perform in operas during the 1970s and also ventured into musical theatre, notably creating the role of Alma in the world premiere of Lee Hoiby's Summer and Smoke. She has appeared in various movies and TV shows throughout her career.
