Mary Lou Retton (born January 24, 1968) is an American retired gymnast. She gained fame for her performance at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where she won a gold medal in the individual all-around competition. Retton also earned two silver medals and two bronze medals during the games, making her one of the most popular athletes in the United States at the time. Her victory in the all-around competition made her the first American woman to achieve this feat in Olympic gymnastics. Retton was born in Fairmont, West Virginia and began her gymnastics career at a young age, inspired by watching Nadia Comăneci in the 1976 Summer Olympics.
