Matthew Donald Berninger (born February 13, 1971) is an American singer-songwriter and the frontman of indie rock band The National. He is also known for his collaboration with Brent Knopf of Ramona Falls and Menomena in the EL VY project. In addition to his band work, Berninger released his solo debut album, Serpentine Prison, in October 2020. Known for his classic baritone voice, Berninger began his career in advertising before pursuing music full-time. He graduated from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1989 and studied graphic design at the University of Cincinnati, where he met fellow band member Scott Devendorf in 1991.
