Matthew John McGrath (December 28, 1875 – January 29, 1941) was an Irish American athlete and police inspector. Born in Curraghmore, County Tipperary, Ireland, McGrath immigrated to the United States and became a member of the Irish American Athletic Club, the New York Athletic Club, and the New York City Police Department. He achieved the rank of Police Inspector and received the NYPD's Medal of Valor twice during his career. McGrath represented the U.S. team in the Olympics in 1908, 1912, 1920, and 1924, specializing in weight throwing events. Standing at 5′ 11½″ (1.82 m) tall and weighing 247 lb (112 kg), he was considered one of the world's greatest weight throwers.
