Maurice Benard (born March 1, 1963) is an American actor known for his role as Sonny Corinthos on the ABC soap opera General Hospital. Born Mauricio José Morales in Martinez, California, Benard grew up in San Francisco and has Nicaraguan and Salvadoran ancestry. He started his acting career as Nico on the soap opera All My Children from 1987 to 1990. In 1993, he joined the cast of General Hospital as Sonny Corinthos, a manic depressive mobster Kingpin. Benard has been recognized for his portrayal, winning three Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor and three Soap Opera Digest Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor. He has also made guest appearances on various television shows.
