Mavis Staples (born July 10, 1939) is an American rhythm and blues and gospel singer and civil rights activist. She gained fame as a member of The Staple Singers, her family's band. Notable hits during her time with the group include 'I'll Take You There' and 'Let's Do It Again'. In 1969, Staples released her debut solo album. Throughout her career, she collaborated with renowned artists such as Aretha Franklin, Prince, Arcade Fire, and David Byrne. Her album 'You Are Not Alone' (2010) reached number one on the Top Gospel Albums chart and earned her a Grammy Award. Staples has continued to release solo albums, including 'Livin' on a High Note' (2016) and 'We Get By' (2019).
