Her breakthrough role was in LWT's Love For Lydia (1977), and she has since appeared in shows such as Special Branch (1969), The Pallisers, Bergerac, Lovejoy, Cadfael, Inspector Morse, and many others. She has also starred in films like Quincy's Quest (1979), Business As Usual (1987), White Hunter Black Heart (1990), and Tom's Midnight Garden (1999). Martin is particularly notable for her portrayal of Fiona Samson in the TV adaptation of Len Deighton's trilogy Berlin Game, Mexico Set, and London Match, as well as her role as Vivien Leigh in the TV biopic Darlings of the Gods.
