Michael Cimino Biography
Michael Antonio Cimino (February 3, 1939 – July 2, 2016) was an American film director, screenwriter, producer, and author. He gained fame for his meticulous attention to detail and pursuit of perfection. Cimino's most notable work was The Deer Hunter (1978), which won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. He started his career as a commercial director in New York before transitioning to screenwriting in Los Angeles. Cimino made his directorial debut with Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974), followed by the critically acclaimed The Deer Hunter. However, his next film, Heaven's Gate (1980), was both a critical and commercial failure, leading to a loss for the production studio.
