Michael Stanley Dukakis is an American retired lawyer and politician. He served as governor of Massachusetts from 1975 to 1979 and again from 1983 to 1991, making him the longest-serving governor in Massachusetts history. Dukakis was born on November 3, 1933, in Brookline, Massachusetts, to Greek immigrants. He attended Swarthmore College and later graduated from Harvard Law School. Dukakis began his political career by winning election to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where he served from 1963 to 1971. In 1988, he was nominated by the Democratic Party for president but lost to George H. W. Bush. Dukakis's tenure as governor was marked by economic growth known as the 'Massachusetts Miracle.'
