Michael Thomas Flynn (born December 24, 1958) is a retired United States Army lieutenant general who served as the 24th U.S. national security advisor for the first 22 days of the Trump administration. He resigned following reports of his misleading statements about conversations with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Throughout his military career, Flynn played a significant role in shaping U.S. counterterrorism strategy and dismantling insurgent networks during the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars. He held various combat arms, conventional, and special operations senior intelligence assignments. From July 2012 to August 2014, he served as the 18th director of the Defense Intelligence Agency. Flynn made history by being the first American official to give a lecture on leadership at the Moscow headquarters of the Russian military intelligence directorate GRU.
