Born on October 19, 1958, he served as the seventh lieutenant governor of Maryland from 2003 to 2007 and as chairperson of the Republican National Committee (RNC) from 2009 to 2011. Steele made history as the first African-American to hold either office. Before entering public service, Steele worked as a partner at the law firm of LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae. He also co-founded the Republican Leadership Council, a political action committee advocating for fiscal conservatism and social inclusivity.
