Michelle Shocked

Michelle Shocked, born Karen Michelle Johnston on February 24, 1962, is an American singer-songwriter. She achieved recognition in the music industry with her songs entering the Billboard Hot 100 and earning her a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Additionally, Shocked received the Folk Album of the Year award at the CMJ New Music Awards. Born in Dallas, Texas, at the Baylor University Medical Center, Shocked grew up in a Mormon family and later went through a punk rock phase in San Francisco. Adopting the stage name 'Michelle Shocked' in 1984, her unique name is a play on the term 'shell shocked', referencing the victims of traumatic experiences.
