Richard Melville Hall, known professionally as Moby, is an American musician, songwriter, singer, producer, and animal rights activist. Born on September 11, 1965, Moby has sold 20 million records worldwide. Starting with underground punk rock bands in the 1980s, he later transitioned to electronic dance music. Moving to New York City in 1989, Moby became a prominent DJ, producer, and remixer. His 1991 single 'Go' marked his mainstream breakthrough, reaching the top ten charts in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. From 1992 to 1997, Moby achieved eight top 10 hits on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. AllMusic recognizes him as a key figure in bringing dance music to a wider audience in the early 1990s.
