Muhammad Yunus is a Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, banker, economist, and civil society leader. Born on June 28, 1940, Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for founding the Grameen Bank and pioneering the concepts of microcredit and microfinance. He is known for providing loans to entrepreneurs who are too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. The Grameen Bank and Yunus were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to create economic and social development through microcredit. Yunus has received numerous national and international honors, including the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010.
