Natalie Anne Merchant (born October 26, 1963) is an American alternative rock singer-songwriter. She rose to fame as the lead vocalist and primary lyricist for the band 10,000 Maniacs, which she joined in 1981. Merchant remained with the group for their first seven albums before embarking on a successful solo career in 1993. Throughout her career, she has released nine studio albums as a solo artist. Born in Jamestown, New York, Merchant grew up in a musical household, with her mother introducing her to a variety of genres. Influenced by artists like the Beatles, Al Green, and Aretha Franklin, Merchant developed her own unique sound and became known for her soulful vocals and introspective songwriting.
