Nathaniel Lees is a New Zealand actor and director of Samoan descent. He gained recognition for his roles in popular films such as The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Lees grew up in an environment where Samoan was commonly spoken, leading him to identify as Samoan. He began his acting career after being cast in a theatre production that required individuals of Samoan descent. Lees is well-known for his portrayal of Captain Mifune in The Matrix trilogy and Uglúk in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.
