Nigel Cooke (born 1973) is a British painter known for his carnivalesque figures set in harsh landscapes filled with urban decay. He was born in Manchester, England and currently resides in Kent. Cooke attended Nottingham Trent University for his undergraduate studies and later completed his M.A. at The Royal College of Art, London, followed by a PHD from Goldsmiths. He is also a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art. Cooke's paintings often feature foreboding elements such as skulls and derelict buildings, and are characterized by his use of bilious toxic greens. He creates his works using multiple layers of oil paint, combining vast areas of color with obsessively detailed figuration.
