Nigel Davenport Biography
Nigel Davenport (1928-2013) was an English stage, television, and film actor. He is best known for his roles as the Duke of Norfolk in the Academy Award-winning film A Man for All Seasons and as Lord Birkenhead in Chariots of Fire. Davenport was born in Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire, to Arthur Henry Davenport and Katherine Lucy Meiklejohn. He came from an academic background and was educated at St Peter's School, Seaford, Cheltenham College, and Trinity College, Oxford. Davenport's father served in the Royal Engineers during World War I and was awarded a Military Cross. Nigel Davenport's great-uncle, Major Matthew Fontaine Maury Meiklejohn, also received a Victoria Cross during the Second Boer War.
