Norma Kamali

Norma Kamali (born June 27, 1945) is an American fashion designer known for her innovative designs and versatile multi-use pieces. Born in Manhattan's Upper East Side, Kamali initially aspired to be a painter but later pursued a career in fashion. She attended the Fashion Institute of Technology and worked as a freelance fashion illustrator before opening her own boutique in 1969. Kamali gained recognition for her line of clothing made from silk parachutes, featuring adjustable lengths and fits. Her designs became iconic, including the red one-piece bathing suit worn by Farrah Fawcett in a 1976 poster. Kamali continues to contribute to the fashion industry with her unique and influential creations.
