Okwui Okpokwasili
Okwui Okpokwasili (born August 6, 1972) is a Nigerian-American artist, performer, choreographer, and writer. With a multidisciplinary approach, Okpokwasili's performances combine elements of theatre, dance, and installation. Her works often delve into historical events in Nigeria and explore cultural and historical memory, as well as the perception of African bodies in Western imagination. Born in The Bronx, New York, to Igbo Nigerian immigrants, Okpokwasili attended Yale University. She gained recognition through her one-woman performances and collaborations with artists such as Ralph Lemon and Peter Born, her husband. Okpokwasili's work has made her a prominent figure in the New York experimental dance scene.
