Oliver Laurence North is an American political commentator, television host, military historian, author, and retired United States Marine Corps lieutenant colonel. Born on October 7, 1943, North served as a National Security Council staff member during the Iran-Contra affair, a political scandal in the late 1980s. He played a key role in formulating a plan to sell weapons to the Islamic Republic of Iran and divert the proceeds to support Contra rebel groups in Nicaragua, which was in violation of the Boland Amendment. Initially convicted on three felony charges, North's convictions were later vacated and reversed, and all charges were dismissed in 1991 due to immunity granted for his testimony before Congress.
