He was born in Los Angeles, California, to Shirley and Cuba Gooding Sr., the former lead singer for The Main Ingredient. Gooding's older brother is Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. He graduated from North Hollywood High School in 1994. Gooding has appeared in various television shows such as Touched by an Angel, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, Smart Guy, and Playmakers. He also starred in films like Ghost Dad and Baby Boy, earning critical praise for his role as "Sweetpea." He was one of the original hosts of the Nickelodeon show Wild & Crazy Kids from 1990 to 1992.
