Parley Baer Biography
Parley Edward Baer (August 5, 1914 – November 22, 2002) was an American actor known for his work in radio, television, and film. He gained recognition as the original 'Chester' in the radio version of Gunsmoke and as the Mayor of Mayberry (Roy Stoner) in The Andy Griffith Show. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Baer studied drama at the University of Utah. Prior to his acting career, he worked as a circus ringmaster and publicist. Baer also served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, attaining the rank of Captain. He later worked as a wild animal trainer at Jungleland USA and as a docent at the Los Angeles Zoo.
