Paul Chaplin, born Paul Schersten, is an American writer and comedian known for his work on the television series Mystery Science Theater 3000. He played multiple recurring characters on the show, including an Observer, Ned the Nanite, Pitch the Demon, and Ortega, as well as various bit roles. After earning his master's degree from the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, Chaplin worked as a community organizer in Saint Paul, Minnesota. However, he decided to pursue a career in comedy and changed his stage surname to Chaplin. He met Michael J. Nelson and Mary Jo Pehl while performing on the comedy club circuit in Minneapolis, leading to his role as a writer on MST3K.
