Peggy Gilbert Biography
Peggy Gilbert (January 17, 1905 – February 12, 2007) was an American jazz saxophonist and bandleader. Born Margaret Fern Knechtges in Sioux City, Iowa, Gilbert began playing piano and violin in her father's band at the age of seven. She later discovered jazz and switched to the saxophone. After high school, Gilbert performed in local theaters and resorts before becoming a radio and television performer. In 1928, she moved to Hollywood and appeared in movies while touring with Fanchon and Marco vaudeville shows. In 1933, Gilbert founded her all-female jazz band, performing on saxophone, vibes, piano, and vocals. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, her band played at renowned Hollywood nightclubs like the Cocoanut Grove. Gilbert also met and fell in love with vaudevillian Kay Boley during this time.
